Cristiano Ronaldo breaks Champions League record

0
0

To qualify for the last 16, Cristiano Ronaldo broke another Champions League record as holders Real Madrid thrashed Apoel Nicosia.

In 2017, Ronaldo scored twice in the second half to take his tally to 18 Champions League goals in 2017 – the most in a calendar year.

Although, Real have been on a poor run still they picked up their biggest away win in the competition. Now, they will face a group winner in the last 16 as Tottenham won Group H.

With a game to spare, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have wrapped up the group with Spurs’ 2-1 win in Dortmund.

In each of his 2 seasons in charge at Real, Zinedine Zidane has won the Champions League in but at the weekend, Real fell 10 points behind Barcelona in La Liga.

A 3-1 defeat by Spurs at Wembley last time out meant they needed to win in Cyprus to qualify, but that was a formality from the moment Luka Modric volleyed in from 25 yards.

All season, Karim Benzema had scored two times but doubled that tally with 2 neat finishes inside the area, while defender Nacho also headed in. Ronaldo has become the 3rd  player in the Champions League era to score in each of the first 5 games of a season

He has 18 in his last 10 appearances in the competition – and now 113 in total, 16 ahead of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi.

Harry Kane in same bracket as Lionel Messi- Ray Wilkins

Ray Wilkins says Harry Kane deserves to be placed in the same bracket as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He says: “I think we get a little bit worried when it’s one of our own, to put them up at that level. But I certainly would. For Messi to score 54 goals playing for Barcelona in Spain, an inferior league, and then all of a sudden Harry is getting 56 – it’s a phenomenal achievement.

“Harry finishes off both feet, he scores with his head, and he doesn’t miss many games. I think we can start putting him in that bracket.” According to Wilkins, Kane would have scored more goals than Shearer at the same age.

He said: “I don’t think Harry Kane is in his pomp and that’s the scary part. Shearer in his pomp was a brilliant footballer and we loved watching him. Like Harry, he scored all types of goals, but was more aggressive. Kane has a lot more to offer.”

He added: “It looks as if Manchester City are going to run away with the league, and when they win against Newcastle – I can’t even say if – they’ll be 15 points clear of Manchester United. That’s a six-game swing and I can’t see them even drawing six games, let alone losing six.

“The competition for those next three places is immense but I think Tottenham have the ability. They seem to have gotten rid of this Wembley hoodoo. That’s the second time they’ve scored a bundle of goals at home – against Stoke and now Southampton. Players like [Heung-Min] Son play off the ball beautifully. They are scoring goals for fun.”

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Real Madrid forward insists he has no more dreams to achieve in football and can retire happy.

“I never dreamed I would win five Ballon d’Or awards. If I had to finish my career now I would do so super happy. I have won everything. If I win another one, two or three Ballon d’Ors then I will be delighted but if not I already won five.”

When asked if had any more dreams to achieve in football, such as winning the World Cup with Portugal, Ronaldo said: “Sincerely I don’t think I have any. I achieved everything I dreamed of in football. I really think I have achieved so many nice things that I don’t have any more dreams.

“But if you ask me if I want to keep winning of course I do. Obviously I would love to win the World Cup. But if my career ended now I would be very proud. I never thought my career was going to be so nice.”

“We are not the favourites. We have to be honest and humble and understand that in theory there are teams with bigger names such as Brazil, Spain, Germany and Argentina. We are not favourites but anything is possible.”

Ronaldo has had 15 seasons like Salah- Jurgen Klopp

0
0

Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager has played down comparisons between Mohamed Salah and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

On 26th May, both players will go head to head when Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev. This season, Ronaldo has scored 42 club goals in all competition while in his debut season at Anfield, Salah has scored 44 goals.

Later this year, the two players are likely to be front-runners in the race to win the Ballon d’Or but Klopp does not believe there is any personal rivalry between the two.

He told Liverpool’s website: “They all have qualities. It’s not about having the better individual, usually it’s about playing the better football. For that to happen, you need all the others as well.”

He added: “Mo played a fantastic season but Cristiano has played 15 seasons like this. He has scored something like 47,000 goals – crazy numbers.

“Why should we compare? At the time of Pele nobody compared Pele to other players and asked, ‘Is he as good as him?’

“Now we have Messi and Ronaldo. They have dominated football for a few years and there are so many other good players.

“Messi and Ronaldo are in the final moment very often in the right position to score a goal and that’s the most difficult thing to do in the world. That’s why they are where they are. The Ballon d’Or is always between them. It’s well deserved. When they stop playing football we will miss them, 100 per cent.”

Ronaldo will have a big influence in Champions League final

0
0

According to Guillem Balague, Cristiano Ronaldo is the man for the big occasion and will have a big influence on Real Madrid’s Champions League final against Liverpool.

“It is interesting because at the beginning of his career, there were enough clues to suggest Ronaldo was missing in big games.

“Perhaps we were demanding too much because we were seeing so much during the league, and during the big occasions he went missing sometimes. There are other times when he wasn’t responsible for that, like when he was used up front as a No 9 on his own by Sir Alex Ferguson, you depend on service and he wasn’t particularly happy being a No 9.

“But that era is now gone and he is the man for the big occasions and he will be again. He will have a lot of influence of course, partly because now Real Madrid are geared to play for him.

“He is the one they look for, he starts counter-attacks and he is also at the end of crosses and moves and he is the man that takes Real Madrid to the next level. I’m sure he’ll have the opportunity to do that. I spoke to Jurgen Klopp last week and he was saying that he didn’t think Real Madrid did not deserve to go to the final.

“If you look at the semi-final, Bayern Munich had a lot of chances and what he is trying to say is that Real Madrid have got the players that can win a game at any second and of course, Ronaldo is the best at that

“Real Madrid don’t need to play well to win and I think in Kiev, you will see those qualities. It is a coin in the air, this game, it could well be that Liverpool start on the front foot and score a couple of goals.

“But I don’t think the game is then finished. Perhaps it was the other way, Real going 2-0 up, it would be finished because they know how to control these games. But, bottom line, it could go either way and it is so difficult to predict.”

Cristiano Ronaldo questions his Real Madrid future

In the wake of Real Madrid winning the Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo says he does not regret his comments in which he threw his future at the club into doubt.

Ronaldo also spoke about his time at the Bernabeu in the past tense, saying: “It was beautiful to be at Real Madrid. I spoke when I shouldn’t have done but something is going to happen. It wasn’t the right time, but I was honest.”

“In a week I’ll say something because the fans have always supported me and are in my heart. I don’t speak much, but when I speak, I speak. Obviously I have something to say, but it wasn’t the right time, although I don’t regret it, because I was honest. I’ve kept putting up with this but then I couldn’t control myself.”

“This has been coming for a long time. Money is not the problem. I’ve won five Champions Leagues, five Ballon d’Ors. I was already in history but now even more. I’m not bothered because I know what I give to this club. I don’t want to erase this unique moment with my team-mates who are real champions.”

Neymar could replace Cristiano Ronaldo & Gareth Bale at Real Madrid

According to Guillem Balague, Real Madrid may be willing to offload Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in order to buy Neymar.

Balague said: “He found a good opportunity to say what he had inside. Up until very recently both Real Madrid and Bale were talking to each other. He was saying: ‘I want to stay’ and the club was saying ‘We want you to stay’.

“But I think he feels that as soon as he leaves the room Real Madrid are talking differently and of course he feels frustrated.

“He just basically wants to play every single week. [Zinedine] Zidane can’t be saying the coach is disappointed with Gareth Bale and how he has reacted to being on the bench.

“You see the quality of Gareth Bale in the game yesterday and you wonder how he could not start a game and how he could not start a Champions League final.

“That’s what in the head of Gareth Bale. He sees himself as one of the top five players in the world and as such he has to play either at Real Madrid or somewhere else.”

FIFA World Cup 2018: 5 contenders for Golden Boot

0
0

The 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup is set to begin on June 14 where the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (French for International Federation of Association Football) will compete for the prestigious trophy.

In 1904, FIFA was founded to oversee international competition among the national associations of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. The headquarters of FIFA are in Zürich, its membership now comprises 211 national associations.

Member countries must each also be members of one of the six regional confederations into which the world is divided: Africa, Asia, Europe, North & Central America and the Caribbean, Oceania, and South America.

In 2018, 31 teams along with the host country (Russia) will fight for the trophy on the Soviet land. Teams like Brazil, Germany (defending champions), France and Spain are the favourites to lift the trophy. As for Belgium, they are touted to be the dark horse.

Golden Boot (or a Golden Shoe, as it was previously called) is awarded to the player with most number of goals to his name at the end of the World cup. Colombia’s James Rodriguez was the winner of this award in 2014, while Germany’s Thomas Muller was the winner in 2010.

Here is a look at 5 players who can win golden boot in FIFA World Cup 2018:

  1. Thomas Muller:

Being the winner of the Golden boot in 2010, he is the leading candidate for this year’s Golden Boot award. Muller had a decent with Bayern where he scored 16 goals and 16 assists. Not renowned for silky technique, mazy dribbles round opposing defenders or outrageous tricks and flicks, is based on the determination, effort and tireless running, attributes that rapidly won him a special place in the hearts of Bayern Munich fans.

He was the top-scorer in World Cup qualifiers 2018 with 5 goals to his names which helped Germany to remain unbeaten in their group.

  1. Neymar:

In the last edition of FIFA World Cup, the fans witness a glimpse of what Neymar could do and this year, he can set the stage on fire. By scoring 6 goals in the world cup qualifiers, he led Brazil to qualify for World cup as a leader in the table.

Currently playing for PSG, he is one hot shot player with his skills and pace on the field. Despite not playing half of the season, he managed to score 27 goals for the club and would be hoping to carry the performance in the World Cup.

  1. Lionel Messi:

This season, Messi is in a great form scoring 45 goals in 54 appearances. Despite Argentina’s history of choking under pressure, Messi has never disappointed his fans.

In world cup qualifiers he scored 7 goals in 10 games, scoring a hat-trick against Ecuador in first world cup qualifying game and also Argentina won 75 per cent of their points when he was on the field.

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo:

Despite his not-so-impressive performance in the national jersey, the Portuguese will enter the tournament as leading contender for Golden Boot.

He has only scored 3 goals in 3 World Cups so far but the performance in the last edition of Euro Cup should come as a warning for opponents.

  1. Antoine Griezmann:

France’s most important player — Antoine Griezmann will play a significant role in France’s campaign this year. Griezmann has been in superb form scoring 29 goals this season.

He was also the top scorer in Euro 2016 with 6 goals. France topped the group during qualifiers with Griezmann being the top scorer with 4 goals.

FIFA denies World Cup referee asked for Ronaldo’s shirt

FIFA denies claims regarding a World Cup referee asking for Cristiano Ronaldo’s shirt during Portugal’s win over Morocco. In the 2nd World Cup group B fixture, Ronaldo headed in the winner as Portugal secured a 1-0 victory over Morocco.

Nordin Amrabat, the Watford and Morocco midfielder reportedly hit out at referee Mark Geiger for an apparent lack of professionalism in his side’s defeat, which dumped the African side out of this year’s tournament.

He is quoted saying: “I do not know what he is used to, but he was very impressed by Cristiano Ronaldo, and I hear from Pepe that he asked in the first half if he should have his shirt. What are we talking about? At the World Cup? It’s not a circus here.”

FIFA have since released a statement insisting Geiger “categorically” denies asking Ronaldo for his shirt. A statement read: “FIFA referees are under clear instructions with regard to their behaviour and relationship with the teams at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and it can be confirmed that Mr Geiger has acted in an exemplary and professional manner as an appointed match official.”

Despite suffering concussion in his country’s opening World Cup game last week, Amrabat played in which Morocco conceded a stoppage-time goal to lose 1-0 against Iran.

After the Portugal defeat, Morocco head coach Herve Renard said: “I’m not a doctor. Medical reports are read by competent people. I’m not competent in medical matters and they take their own responsibility and so does the player. I think he did an exceptional and outstanding match.”

Cristiano Ronaldo Juventus

#CR7Day finally arrived at Turin as Cristiano Ronaldo is presented as a Juventus player.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner touched down at Caselle Airport last Sunday afternoon at Turin, hyping the #CR7Day as well as touring the new city.

#CR7Day started with the former Madridista walking in the J | Medical before meeting with Mister Allegri and his new teammates. After which, the new Bianconeri showed his face to the fans and signing before delivering the most anticipated press conference at Allianz Stadium.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Press Conference at Allianz Stadium

The first words out of the mouth of Cristiano Ronaldo were “it was an easy decision to join Juventus”,  and declared it the “the greatest club in Italy and one of the best in the world.

It was not any later that he proved his point by saying that “it’s no coincidence that they have won the last seven Scudetto titles in a row”. He said that he “feel honored” that Juve thought of him and that he wants “to take the club to an even higher level.

I want to make my mark in the history of Juventus.” – added Ronaldo.

Continuing by saying that “it’s a brand new challenge” and “coming to such a big club at this stage” makes him “very happy”.

Ronaldo said that he doesn’t like to stay in comfort zone or to sit down and look at the past but he’s rather a concentrated and focus player who looks for his future. He said that he’s going “to work hard” and “prove” that he’s “a top player again.”

Ronaldo said that it was a “stunning moment” for him receiving “that standing ovation (after the bicycle kick against Juventus in the Champions League).” He said that it gives him “extra motivation” to make “the fans happy” as he starts this new adventure.

After which he talked about the Champions League and how Juventus have come extremely close to win it in recent seasons. He acknowledged that “it’s a difficult competition to win”, but he will be doing his best “to help this team be successful.” He hopes that he turns out to be a “lucky star for the club.

The former five-time Ballon d’Or said that it “is not something that I’m thinking about right now.” Although he said that he does want “to win and be the best.” He said that he just wants “the future to take its natural course” and he’s “confident that the future is bright.

Ronaldo announced that he’ll “start training on 30 July” and he would like to play his “first match when the Serie A season begins.” He said that he “can’t wait to get started” and that he’s “really motivated” to show he’s “still a top player and we’ll all be fighting for every trophy going.

Juventus’ Sporting Director, Fabio Paratici, had this to say about Ronaldo’s arrival at the club:

“On behalf of the management team, I would like to say a big thank you. I have received so many messages from our players, who are very excited about Cristiano joining us. Everyone is in high spirits and I believe that this represents a significant step towards raising our standard even further.”

Cristiano Ronaldo reaches agreement over tax fraud

According to reports, Cristiano Ronaldo is set to plead guilty to tax fraud as part of a deal he has agreed with Spanish authorities.

He is expected to accept a suspended two-year prison sentence and also to pay a fine of close to 19m euros (£16.9m). On Thursday, a source confirmed to The Associated Press that the agreement will be finalised in the coming days.

The player has reached a tentative deal with the state prosecutor’s office, but Spain’s tax authorities had yet to sign off on the agreement, as last year a Spanish state prosecutor accused Ronaldo of four counts of tax fraud from 2011-14 worth 14.7m euros.

He was accused of having used shell companies outside Spain to hide income made from image rights. The accusation does not involve his salary from his time with Real, however, last July; Ronaldo denied any wrongdoing when questioned by a judge.

After being found guilty of defrauding tax authorities of 4.1m euros, in 2016, Barcelona forward Lionel Messi received a suspended 21-month jail sentence. Earlier this month, Juventus signed Ronaldo from Real in a club record deal.

And he is set to start his Serie A career at Chievo (on the weekend of August 18-19) after the opening round of Italian top-flight fixtures were released on Wednesday.

Edinson Cavani of PSG to Real Madrid?

0

Edinson Cavani

There have been rumors surrounding the Uruguayan player’s possible move from the Paris club Paris Saint-Germain to the Spanish club Real Madrid but the question is, are the rumors true?

As the previous rumors of the biggest star of Real Madrid’s, Cristiano Ronaldo, move to Juventus came true, and as Real Madrid are now looking for a replacement for Ronaldo to buy someone big this transfer season, this Uruguayan star Cavani might just be the one.

Thomas Tuchel, the German tactician and the new head coach of Paris Saint-Germain, was asked after the 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid at National Stadium in the final match of the International Champions Cup (ICC) in Singapore of the future of Uruguayan player and this is what he had to say about it.

“I think Cavani will stay in PSG. Nobody talked to me about it and I believe he will stay, I’m not thinking about him leaving. I talked to him and he didn’t show any kind of interest in leaving the team. He’s a key player for us and there’s no thought about giving him away.”

So it seems like Cavani is not willing to force his way out of Paris and neither are PSG willing to sell him otherwise, and as it seems Madrid intentions for buying Cavani might have to look elsewhere if they want a striker.

“Lionel Messi is the greatest ever” – Wayne Rooney

Lionel Messi

Another one of the Ronaldo’s former teammates from Manchester United has spoken their mind on who is the better of the two in the greatest football rivalry of all time, Ronaldo vs Messi.

Former Red Devil’s star, Wayne Rooney, says that both Ronaldo and Messi are the best two players but the Argentinian star Lionel Messi is the greatest ever.

The rivalry of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will probably stay for a few more years as both the stars were knocked out of Russia on the same day. Things might get a bit interesting as Cristiano Ronaldo looks to make a mark in his new team, Juventus.

Both Rooney and Ronaldo were a formidable attacking option during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign as Manchester United’s manager. Playing with Rooney helped Ronaldo become the deadliest finisher, scoring 118 goals in only 292 games with a ratio of 0.4 strikes per match.

When the question was asked to Rooney, “who is better?” The former teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo spontaneously answered “Messi” which shocked the people in the studio of Barstool Sports, with reply of “oh, that was quick!” The former England captain said, “They’re both probably the best two players to ever play the game, I just think Messi is, in my eyes, the greatest ever.”

As Cristiano Ronaldo is set to debut in the BianconerI next month, and Lionel Messi set to play at the end of this month, we look forward to what this great rivalry brings to us next.

Cristiano Ronaldo is considered as one of best all-time players.

While defending himself, Ronaldo said in a video: “They want to promote [themselves] by [using] my name. It’s normal”.

Ronaldo’s lawyers are further preparing to sue Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine which initially reported the accusations.

According to the magazine, Kathryn Mayorga had accused that Ronaldo, 33, raped her in a hotel room in Las Vegas in 2009.

What US woman claimed?

Ms. Mayorga, 34, had filed a rape report with Las Vegas police just after the suspected incident. However, after a year, she agreed on an out-of-court agreement with Ronaldo. It also involved a $375,000 (£288,000) payment for not publicizing the allegations.

However, her lawyers declared the non-disclosure settlement void. Ronaldo’s lawyer, Christian Schertz called “the reporting in Spiegel is blatantly illegal”.

Cristiano Ronaldo is considered as one of best all-time players. The Portuguese superstar now joined Italy’s Juventus from Real Madrid for £99.2m.

During Sunday’s dramatic Super Cup win over Barcelona, Cristiano Ronaldo was handed a 5-game ban after his red card and subsequent push on the referee, however, Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has slammed the five-game ban handed to the star.

The French said, ‘’I am annoyed. We are all annoyed and upset. I’m not going to get involved with the referees but, after what happened, to think that he’ll not play for five games, makes you think that something isn’t right. It’s too long for him.

“I hope that when the (committee) meet, they look at it thoroughly. Everyone can have their opinion but Cristiano Ronaldo is upset because he wants to play and when he doesn’t play he’s not happy.

“I hope they’ve not got something against Cristiano Ronaldo and people do their job with integrity. We’re upset that we are not going to have him with us for a long time. We’ll wait to see what happens.”

Real defender Dani Carvajal said, “Cristiano’s ban is excessive. I don’t think (he) wants to undermine the referee and it’s a frustrating situation in which he was unfairly sent off.

“Hopefully they will withdraw the suspension. I don’t know what goes off in the referees’ head, but I reiterate that it’s excessive and even more so putting it in the report so that he got more games. We’re all affected by the suspension, he’s a key player for us.”
